Knowing your skin type is a key element in creating a good skin care regime. However, there are basic steps that you--regardless of your gender or specific skin care needs--can incorporate to enhance the health of your skin. Be consistent with your skin care regime and reap the health benefits of nourished skin.

Use Gentle Cleansers

Ideally, you should cleanse your skin upon waking in the morning, before going to bed at night and at other times as needed, such as after a midday workout. Choose a product that is specific to your skin type. For example, if you have oily skin, cleanse with products that are oil-free; if your skin is dry, avoid products that have an alcohol base such as toners and astringents. Regardless of your skin type, look for products that have glycerin as one of the active ingredients. Glycerin is a humectant--it attracts moisture, thereby softening your skin and reducing dryness, fine lines and wrinkles.

Wear Sunscreen

Even if you can tolerate long periods of sun exposure, tan easily and have darker skin, you still need to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. According to MayoClinic.com, the sun’s rays penetrate deep into your skin and can damage the DNA of your skin cells, in some cases ending in skin cancer. Apply sunscreens with a high SPF--Sun Protection Factor--no more than 30 minutes before sun exposure and again throughout the day as needed. Cosmetics such as foundation and many lotions often contain sunscreen for your convenience.

Condition Your Skin

Apply a moisturizer after washing and patting your face and body dry. Moisturizers trap water, preventing it from evaporating and drying your skin. Creams and ointments are generally less irritating than lotions because they are less likely to have fragrances that may irritate sensitive skin. Purchase products that contain lactic acid and urea to alleviate severe dryness, and hyaluronic acid--which naturally occurs in the skin but diminishes with age--to help your skin lock in moisture. If you have naturally oily skin, apply products that are oil-free to avoid clogged pores, and avoid using products that are alcohol-based if your skin is naturally dry.

Exfoliate

Exfoliate your skin on a weekly basis with a loofah sponge, sea salt, a brush or a homemade exfoliating remedy. Exfoliation helps to speed up the process of skin shedding by taking off the outermost layers of your skin--the layer that is most exposed to dirt, oil and environmental toxins. Your complexion will improve with the help of exfoliation because new skin cells will regenerate and old ones will not clog your pores, creating discoloration or acne. Only use exfoliating products made specifically for the face, because those made for the body may be too abrasive and may irritate your skin. Always use a moisturizer after exfoliating to prevent dryness.
