By knowing the racquetball rules and applying some simple strategies, you can learn how to excel at the game. No matter how well you play, however, racquetball provides an adequate cardiovascular workout and friendly competition at the same time. The objective of the game is to score more points than your opponent by winning rallies. A rally is over when the ball bounces twice before your opponent hits the ball, or if your opponent fails to hit the front wall before the ball hits the ground.

The Serve

The right and left drive service lines run parallel to the front wall, and is where you stand to serve the ball. It has a width of 5 feet. You must be standing here when you serve the ball. When serving, the ball must bounce before you can hit it, it must hit the front wall before it touches the ground and the ball must bounce past the left drive service line. The server has two chances to make a legal serve; if the second serve is illegal, it is the receiver's serve.

Rallying

After the serve, the players will alternate shots until either the ball bounces twice before a player is able to hit it to the front wall, or if a player fails to hit the ball against the front wall before it hits the ground. The ball can hit a side wall, back wall, or ceiling prior to hitting the front wall, but cannot touch the ground.

Winning

A typical racquetball game is played to 15 points, and you can only score a point when serving. The format is best of three games, and if each player wins the first two games, an 11-point tiebreaker game is played.
