Testosterone is a male hormone produced in the testes which helps to develop the male sex organs and maintain other characteristics of masculinity. For men, testosterone maintains muscle strength and mass, high bone density, red blood cell production, sperm production and sex drive, and regulates fat distribution. Several natural supplements may boost testosterone levels.
Zinc
In order to maintain normal serum testosterone, you must maintain adequate levels of zinc in your diet. The pituitary gland relies on zinc to release luteinising and follicle-stimulating hormones which then stimulate testosterone production. Zinc also helps to maintain your testosterone-to-estrogen ratio, which is especially important for older men. By inhibiting the aromatase enzyme that converts testosterone into excess estrogen, zinc helps to decrease the risk of heart disease and obesity associated with high estrogen in men.
Tribulus Terrestris Extract
Sopharma AD manufactures a tribulus terrestris extract supplement which enhances the luteinizing hormone which then enhances testosterone levels in healthy men, stimulating the libido and increasing sperm count. This supplement also stimulates the cholesterol metabolism and may reduce serum cholesterol, though this claim has not been evaluated by the Federal Drug Administration. As of 2010 there have been no adverse drug reactions observed from tribulus terrestris extract.
Horny Goat Weed
Traditional Chinese medicine refers to horny goat weed as Ying Yang Huo and uses this natural testosterone supplement to treat low testosterone, as well as kidney, back and liver disorders. This supplement has similar effects as testosterone, stimulating sperm production, sexual desire and sensory nerves in men. In a study cited by Bodybuildingforyou.com, 13 of 20 healthy men found horny goat weed effective for their sexual health. Six of 13 men already taking Viagra also found increased sexual desire, a sign of good testosterone levels.
