Hair loss is a common condition suffered by both men and women as they age. Hair loss is usually inherited and caused by genetics. However, certain conditions such as illness, radiation therapy, emotional stress and poor nutrition can also cause you to lose your hair. Whatever the origin, there are remedies that may be able to help you regrow your hair.

Medication

Medication is a common treatment for hair loss. However, the effectiveness of medication varies and is usually less effective in more severe cases. Two of the most common, and FDA approved medications, are Rogaine and Propecia.

Rogaine is a liquid or foam that you rub into your scalp to both regrow hair and prevent further hair loss. It may take up to 12 weeks to regrow hair. This new hair may be shorter and thinner than your normal hair but should be enough to cover bald spots. Propecia, which is not approved for use by women, is a pill taken daily. It works by stopping a hormone that shrinks hair follicles.

Hair Transplant

Surgery is an effective form of treating hair loss. There are several types of hair transplants including punch grafts, minigrafts, micrografts, slit or strip grafts. During a hair transplant, a dermatologist or surgeon will remove small plugs of skin containing several hairs from the back and side of your scalp. The plugs are then planted on your bald spots. Several sessions may be needed depending on the severity of the case.

Scalp Reduction

The skin compromising your scalp is flexible and can be stretched. During a scalp reduction, the hairless parts are removed and then the scalp is stretched so that the top of the head is covered with hair. Scalp reduction can be combined with a hair transplant for a natural looking hairline.

Nutrition

Certain vitamins are vital for proper hair growth. Therefore, poor nutrition can result in hair loss. If you are losing hair, and believe it is due to poor nutrition, there are certain tips to help reduce symptoms. Try to eat foods high in B vitamins and iron, eat antioxidant foods like fruits and vegetables, and reduce red meat, fatty foods and coffee. If needed, you should consider taking a multivitamin supplement.

Wigs and Hairpieces

An alternative to medicine and expensive surgery is the use of wigs or hairpieces. These can be used for temporary or permanent hair loss and provide an effective and non-invasive option for hair loss.
