Since their development in the 1930's Dr. Edward Bach's flower essences have been a method of alternative therapy called energy healing, that aims to deal with a person's emotional state and well-being.

Mind-Body Connection
Flower essence therapy is a type of energy healing concerned with the mind-body connection. Bach developed the system based on the notion that many ailments are controlled by the psyche and that negative emotions can have an impact a person's health.
Dr. Bach believed that mental attitude was a key component in health and the body's ability to recover from disease, according to Nelson's Natural World website, the manufacturer of the Bach remedies.
Theory
In his book "Heal Thyself" Dr. Bach states "disease is in itself beneficent and for our good and, if rightly interpreted, it will guide us to our essential faults... and the removal of those faults."
The underlying theory of flower essence therapy suggests replacing the negative feelings a person may be experiencing, with the positive energy of a particular plant.
The vital force of a plant or flower is thought to be captured on the day of harvest. When a person uses a flower essence, it is believed this transference of energy could allow a person to feel balanced and happier, in turn helping their body to heal.
Flower Power
Bach identified 38 negative emotions associated with illness; based on careful observation and scientific evaluation, and formulated his flower essences to counteract each state of mind.
Each essence is identified with a particular emotional state and/or personality; for example Rock Rose is believed to aid in eliminating deep fear and panic, whereas Chicory might work to balance out a possessive and needy person.
The Bach system of flower essences is relatively easy to use with a little basic knowledge, and choosing a remedy to fit the situation at hand is primarily a matter of evaluating individual mood.
Use and Application
Bach flower remedies are considered safe for most people by practitioners, and can be applied to pets and plants alike. The energy of the flower is infused with spring water and does not contain any constituents of the plant, so there are no phytochemicals to counteract against medications or cause allergic reactions.
The essences are sustained in alcohol, but can be diluted in water, or applied topically if consumption is a personal concern.
Instructions call for two drops of the formula, which can be mixed with a glass of water or applied directly to the tongue; as often as needed to find an emotional balance.
Additional Notes
To find the best essence for a particular mood, a remedy finder is available, which pairs emotions to the appropriate healing agent. Remedy finders can be found at any store where Bach remedies are available, or via the internet.
