The best approach to weight loss is not fad diets, but a reasoned approach that incorporates healthy eating and exercise. There are some studies that suggest that certain herbs can support the effectiveness of your weight-loss efforts. However, you should take herbal supplements for weight loss only under the supervision of a qualified medical doctor.

Guarana

Guarana, or Paullinia cupana sorbilis, is a South American climbing shrub often touted for its ability to increase energy, enhance athletic performance and spur weight loss. According “Some Facts About Energy Drinks” by Karrie Heneman, Ph.D. and Sheri-Zidenberg-Cherr, Ph.D., the caffeine content of guarana validates these claims; caffeine is an appetite suppressant and stimulant. Guarana can have adverse effects if taken in large doses. Before using it as part of a diet and exercise program, ask your doctor to ensure it is suitable for you.

Licorice

The licorice plant, Glycyrrhiza glabra, is often associated with jelly beans and long twist candy. It also is a sugar substitute, because it is 50 times sweeter than table sugar. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, studies have shown licorice might be helpful in reducing weight, body fat and LDL cholesterol levels. Side effects of prolonged licorice use include headaches, high blood pressure and heart issues. Licorice is a potent herb, and you should use it only under a doctor's care.

Garcinia Cambogia

Garcinia is a fruit from Southeast Asia or India that is used in curries. Its rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), often marketed as an appetite suppressant. Garcinia cambogia might suppress appetite and inhibit an enzyme involved in fat production called lyase. California State University’s Carolyn VanCouwenberghe, R.N. Ph.D. says that clinical results using HCA alone are mixed. Studies that mixed HCA with other substances like caffeine or L-carnitine showed greater reductions in body weight or fat compared to placebos. As with any herbal supplement, consult with your doctor before using.
