Metabolife is an over-the-counter supplement that aids in weight loss. It has also been used to increase energy and improve athletic performance. Unfortunately, the ingredients of Metabolife may cause some serious side effects, which in some cases can be life-threatening. Prior to 2002, representatives for Metabolife told the Food and Drug Administration that they had not received any reports of adverse effects from using their product. Upon further investigation from the Justice Department, it was discovered that consumers had actually reported adverse effects.
Overstimulation
Metabolife contains Ma Huang, otherwise known as ephedra. This ancient Chinese herb has been to treat asthma. Ephedra stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, while causing vasoconstriction of the blood vessels in the lining of the nose. It can also dilate the bronchial tubes and overstimulate the heart. Side effects of ephedra include hypertension, heart palpitations, insomnia, psychosis, heart attacks, nervousness and death. Guarana, another primary ingredient of Metabolife, is a product that contains caffeine. Given its stimulating effect on the nervous system, guarana combined with ephedra can increase the possibility of the ephedra-related health risks.
Pulmonary Hypertension
Several studies have linked the use of ephedra, one of the main ingredients in Metabolife, with pulmonary hypertension, which is described as high blood pressure in the lungs. In fact, there have been hundreds of lawsuits that link Metabolife or ephedra use with pulmonary hypertension.
Skin and Hair Disorders
Many Metabolife users have complained of having dry skin and/or dry hair.
FDA Findings
Upon investigation, the FDA discovered that there have been at least three deaths associated with Metabolife use.
Justice Department Findings
Investigation by the Justice Department found reports of 20 heart attacks, 24 strokes, 40 seizures, 465 incidents of chest pain and 966 incidents of heart arrhythmia related to Metabolife use. The Justice Department also found that hundreds of consumers had complained of high blood pressure and psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety and psychosis.
