Living with asthma or allergies can be a difficult thing to do. You never know when and where an attack will hit, and it's hard to be prepared for them. Luckily, there is a drug on the market that helps control asthma and allergies with once-a-day tabs. Singulair is made by Merck and has helped millions of people with these problems. Like all drugs, however, Singulair has some serious side effects that you need to keep in mind. As with any drug, should you feel any of these, you should stop taking the drug and visit your doctor.
Ear, Nose and Throat
The side effects of the drug hit several areas. There are a few things in your ears, nose and throat to watch out for. Side effects in this area include: difficulty swallowing, laryngitis, sore throat, sinus pain, runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, ear pain or infection, or swelling of the mouth and throat.
Stomach and Body
Several side effects of the drug also affect the stomach region. These include: abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, nausea and vomiting. The skin and body can be affected with bruising, hives, itching, numbness, a rash, skin inflammation and eczema.
Lung and Mental Side Effects
Since Singulair is a drug that helps those with asthma and allergies breathe more easily, some of its more serious side effects will affect the lungs. Bronchitis, persistent cough, difficulty breathing, an upper respiratory infection and pneumonia can be side effects of Singulair.
The drug can also affect you mentally with serious issues. The mental effects of the drug can be: abnormal dreams, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, feeling anxious, hallucinations, headaches, insomnia, seizures, restlessness and suicidal thoughts (including committing suicide).
Miscellaneous
With any drug, not all side effects are limited to certain areas of the body. Singulair is no different. There are a few miscellaneous side effects that need to be addressed. These include: an allergic reaction, dental pain, eye inflammation, fever, flu, infections, irritability, joint pain, leg pain, muscle aches, swelling due to fluid retention, a tendency to bleed easily, massive thirst, a tremor and a viral infection.
