Headache is simply pain in the head that is more a symptom than a disease. There are many different reasons for experiencing a headache and while traditional allopathic treatments are typically the same for all headaches, homeopathic treatments are tailored to the specific symptoms of each type of headache.

According to naturopathic physician Robert Ullman, homeopathic self-care is an ideal application for the benefits of homeopathy. The treatments are considered to be safe for all ages and have been shown to be effective when the appropriate remedy is selected. Homeopathic medicines can be purchased online, at health food stores, and from homeopathic practitioners. For those who are reluctant to fill their bodies with pharmaceutical chemicals, homeopathy offers a gentle alternative for self care.

A severe headache with a fever can be a sign of serious illness such as meningitis, so if you have persistent or very severe headaches, see a medical professional so more serious conditions may be ruled out.

Homeopathic Belladonna

For headaches, homeopathic practitioners believe that homeopathic belladonna is indicated with the occurrence of right-sided pain with severe throbbing, as well as migraines that are made worse with movement, and extreme sensitivity to noise with a maddening violent onset.

Belladonna, or nightshade, is thought to work very well for headaches that are the result of too much sun and the person in need of belladonna may have glassy eyes and a fiery red, dry, hot face. For the visual auras typical to migraine sufferers, belladonna is usually the first remedy to try. For chronic migraines, talk to a naturopathic doctor or homeopath for a stronger constitutional remedy.

Bryonia

According to "Homeopathic Self-Care," the symptoms that match the onset of irritability combined with a sensitive and splitting headache made worse by motion, indicates the use of homeopathic Bryonia. The person in need of Bryonia may be seen holding their head and closing their eyes to help relieve the pain, and is usually extremely thirsty.

Gelsemium

Stress headaches brought on by fright or social pressures are believed by holistic care practitioners to be an indication for using homeopathic gelsemium. This type of headache is characterized by a dizzy, droopy demeanor and muscle aches throughout the body, neck and back of head circling across the forehead in a pressing sensation.

Gelsemium is also the remedy of choice for headaches resulting from an overindulgence of alcohol. This is not a substitute for drinking moderately and responsibly.

Homeopathic Self-Care Expectations

For an acute headache, homeopathic medicines tend to work quickly, usually in minutes to hours, which is good news for anyone suffering with head pain. If you experience from constitutional or chronic headaches, a naturopathic or homeopathic doctor is recommended to address the prevention of recurrence and to assess whether there is a more serious underlying problem.
