Neti Pot Instructions

A neti pot is a container that holds a solution and helps you to clean out your sinuses. This can be especially beneficial when you have a cold or other sinus trouble, as it can immediately clear any congestion from your nasal passages. Using a neti pot can also relieve a headache, energize you and help prevent sinus infections.

Step 1

Mix 1/8 tsp. salt into 8 oz. lukewarm water. Use this solution to fill your neti pot. Alternatively, purchase a commercial neti pot solution.

Step 2

Tilt your head to the side and forward and lean over a sink. Pour water from the neti pot into one nostril. Allow the solution to flow into one nostril, out the other side and into the sink. Blow your nose using the tissues, being careful not to pinch your nostrils shut.

Step 3

Refill the neti pot with a fresh saltwater or commercial solution. Repeat Step 2 with the other nostril.

Step 4

Bend at the waist so that your upper body is perpendicular to the floor. Point your forehead toward the floor. Hold this position for several seconds, and then stand up and blow your nose again to expel any remaining solution and mucus from your sinuses and nasal passages.

Tips and Warnings

  • Put a bit of petroleum jelly on the outside of your nostrils if that area is sore from blowing your nose when you have a cold. This will help you avoid the stinging that the saltwater solution can cause.
  • If you have green, yellow or blood-tinged mucus in your nose, stop using your neti pot and see your physician. You may have a sinus infection that requires antibiotics.
