Miraplex is a brand name for pramipexole dihydrochloride. Miraplex is a prescription medicine for the treatment of moderate to severe cases of primary restless legs syndrome (RLS). The symptoms of RLS have been described as unpleasant sensations in the leg which are relieved by movements of the leg. Secondary RLS is an unrelated condition that can result from pregnancy, anemia or iron deficiency, and Miraplex in not approved for the treatment of secondary RLS. Miraplex has been shown to be an effective long-term treatment for primary RLS, but there are side effects that patients should be aware of, as some of them can be dangerous.

Sleepiness

Miraplex can cause drowsiness in patients. It can cause patients to fall asleep without warning, even while patients are doing activities that require alertness such as driving motor vehicles. Patients should inform their physicians if they drink alcohol or take any medication that makes them drowsy, as Miraplex can increase the chances of falling asleep unexpectedly. Some patients have fallen asleep without any prior indication of sleepiness.

Hallucinations

Patients who take Miraplex can experience hallucinations; that is, they can see, feel, hear or smell things that aren’t there. Patients who are older than 65 have a higher risk of experiencing hallucinations.

Other Side Effects

Patients who take Miraplex can experience low blood pressure and feel dizzy, faint, nauseated or sweaty when they stand up or sit up quickly. Patients can develop problems with compulsive shopping, compulsive eating, gambling and an increased sex drive.

Most Common

The most common side effects of taking Miraplex are nausea, headache and tiredness. The patient’s physician should be notified if any of these symptoms occur.

Parkinson’s Disease

Miraplex is also sometimes prescribed for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The side effects that are most common for patients suffering from PD include nausea, dizziness, constipation, sleepiness, hallucinations, muscle weakness, insomnia, confusion and abnormal movements.

Other Risks

It is not known if Miraplex will harm unborn babies. Patients should advise their physicians if they are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Also, it is not known if Miraplex is passed into breast milk. Physicians should be advised if patients are breastfeeding, as those who are breastfeeding should not take Miraplex.
