Lips can dry out and become chapped or cracked quite easily because they don't have any oil glands, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. A number of factors can contribute to chapped lips such as cold, wind, sun and dehydration. Certain skin care products may also have drying effects on the lips. Applying lip balm, staying hydrated and a few lifestyle changes may help restore moisture to cracked lips.
Apply Lip Balm
Lip balm is typically the first line of defense for treating cracked lips. Since the sun can cause lips to become dry and chapped, it's best to use a lip balm that contains sunscreen with a sun protection factor or SPF of at least 15, recommends the AAD.
Lip balm products that contain beeswax or an an oil-based lubricating cream can help soothe and moisten cracked lips.
Protect Your Face
Shielding your face from the elements can help prevent cracked lips and keep them from drying out even further. Covering your mouth with a scarf, hat or mask on windy days, especially when it is cold, may help preserve moisture in your lips, notes the AAD.
Apply lip cream or balm before heading out in cold, dry weather. Remember to reapply frequently while outdoors.
Drink Plenty of Fluids
Your lips are more susceptible to dryness and cracking when you are dehydrated, according to the Mayo Clinic. Drinking plenty of water and other fluids may help prevent chapping. The National Institutes of Health recommends drinking six to eight glasses of water per day.
Don't Lick Your Lips
Frequently licking your lips can cause them to become sore and cracked as the wetness from saliva can be very drying, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you are in the habit of licking your lips, it may be best to avoid pleasant-tasting lip balms that may prompt you to lick them even more often.
Increase Air Moisture
Keeping the air in your environment humid can help prevent cracked lips. A home humidifier adds moisture to the air. If you decide to use a humidifier, clean it regularly to guard against bacteria, advises the Mayo Clinic.
