Young skin is rich in collagen and elastin, two substances that keep your skin elastic and in continual renewal. As you age, collagen production slows, so dead cells no longer shed so quickly. Skin also thins as you age, making skin imperfections more obvious, according to the Skin Care Physicians website. How soon wrinkles appear depends on a number of factors, including how well you take care of your skin, sun exposure and even your diet.
Change Habits
A number of small things you do everyday can increase wrinkles or your chance of developing them. The American Academy of Dermatology, for example, points out that sleeping on your stomach can increase wrinkles, as the pillows can create lines and indentations on your skin that don’t go away. Sleeping on your back is the best option to protect your skin.
Squinting can also lead to wrinkles, so make sure you wear glasses if you notice yourself squinting after hours spent on front of a monitor or if the sun bothers you. If you already have a furrow brow, squinting will worsen the wrinkle. When you stop squinting, the skin will relax and the wrinkle will appear less prominent.
Start With Creams
Keep your skin moisturized at all times to make sure wrinkles don’t look deeper than they really are. When going out, apply sunscreen or, better yet, buy makeup or face cream that contains sunscreen, so you’ll never forget to wear it. Creams containing alpha-hydroxy acids or AHAs, retinoids including Retin-A, vitamin C or pentapeptides can all help you fight aging skin. Start with over-the-counter creams, but consider asking your doctor for a prescription if your wrinkles are deep and don’t respond to lighter creams.
Treat Your Body Well
Exercise gets your blood flowing, which in turn helps your body eliminate toxins and clear your skin. A good diet rich in natural foods is also essential, as fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that will make your skin look younger and healthier. Avoid smoking, which robs your skin of oxygen and makes it age faster. Smoking also increases the likelihood of developing wrinkles around the lips and mouth.
