Loss of sex drive can be an embarrassing problem for anyone. According to the Mayo Clinic many factors, including stress, insomnia, religious beliefs or medications can all contribute to sexual dysfunction. While some traditions consider certain foods or drinks to be aphrodisiacs, some modern research may support the use of certain herbs to enhance libido. As many herbs are not yet FDA approved, it is important to consult a healthcare professional before trying herbs for the first time. In all cases herbs should be used in conjunction with and not in place of conventional medical care.

Damiana

Damiana is an herb native to Central and South America. It is used by herbalists to treat fatigue, hormone imbalances and as a tonic for the central nervous system. According to the Clayton College of Natural Health herb guide it is used in both males and females. In males it is believed to increase sperm count and helps regulate ovulation in females. It is also used to treat menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and decreased sex drive. Damiana is generally recognized as safe by the FDA, but should still be used under the direction of a healthcare practitioner.

Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto is a palm tree which grows throughout most tropical regions. The berry or blossom of the tree is used in herbal and folk medicine to treat urinary tract problems and increase sexual libido. The University of Maryland Medical Center cites some studies which indicate that saw palmetto may help to shrink enlarged prostate glands. The herb appears to be as effective as conventional prescription medication, but without the loss of libido. However the University of Maryland points that because these studies are limited, further testing is needed. For now, individuals should use saw palmetto as directed by their physician.

Yohimbe

Yohimbe is an African herb with a reputation as a natural aphrodisiac. It contains the chemical yohimbine hydrochloride, which is used in prescription medication to treat erectile dysfunction. It is used by herbalists as a male enhancement and for body-building. The University of Maryland recommends the herb as a natural adjunct treatment for sexual dysfunction. However it warns that high doses may be dangerous and may interact with other medications. It should be used only under supervision of a healthcare provider.

Ginseng

Ginseng, specifically Panax ginseng, is a versatile herb which is used by herbalists to treat a variety of conditions, including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, headaches, indigestion, fevers and colds. It is considered a whole body tonic, nourishing to the nervous system and helps the body adapt to stress. It is also considered a sexual stimulant. It should be used with caution as scientific evidence is still lacking to support many of these claims. The Clayton College herb guide also notes that it contains natural estrogens and should not be used by teenage girls.
