How to Fix a Life Fitness 4500HR Treadmill

The Life Fitness 4500HR is a treadmill suitable for use in the home as part of an aerobic exercise regimen. The device is composed of a control console connected to a motor that powers a rotating belt; you can adjust the difficulty of your workout by increasing the speed at which the belt moves or by elevating the level of the treadmill's deck to simulate running up an incline. Should the Life Fitness 4500HR cease to function as desired, you can use simple hand tools to open the device's casing and install replacement components.

Lift Actuator

Step 1

Flip the treadmill's power switch, located on the base of the treadmill, to the “off” position. Unplug the power cord from its electrical outlet.

Step 2

Remove the two screws securing the vent cover to the base of the treadmill. Grip the center of the cover, then pull the cover away from the treadmill until the attached tabs release. Set the vent cover aside.

Step 3

Remove the screw securing the retaining plate and fiberboard wedge to the base of the treadmill's upright column; set the plate and wedge aside. Remove the screws securing the motor cover to the treadmill's base. Lift the motor cover off the treadmill's base and set it aside.

Step 4

Disconnect the cable leading from the lift actuator to the controller board. Remove the hair pins and push bolts securing the lift motor nut to the lift frame assembly. Remove the hair pin and clevis pin securing the lift actuator to the treadmill's frame.

Step 5

Remove the lift actuator from the treadmill and install the replacement component. Use the previously removed hair pins, push bolts and clevis pin to secure the new actuator to the frame and the lift motor nut to the lift frame assembly.

Step 6

Return the motor cover, retaining plate, fiberboard wedge and vent cover to their original locations and use the previously removed screws to secure each component in place.

Motor

Step 1

Flip the treadmill's power switch to the “off” position and unplug the power cord from its electrical outlet. Remove the vent cover and motor hood as described. Disconnect the three lead wires from the motor terminal. Disconnect the sensor cable from its retaining clip and unplug the cable from the control board.

Step 2

Remove the lock nut on the tensioning bolt and shift the motor mounting bracket until you can remove the drive belt from the motor pulley. Remove the screws securing the motor assembly to the mounting bracket.

Step 3

Remove the existing motor assembly and install the replacement component. Use the previously removed screws to secure the assembly to the mounting bracket. Replace the drive belt onto the motor pulley; check that the position of the belt on the motor pulley is aligned with that of the front roller pulley.

Step 4

Replace the lock nut onto the tensioning bolt. Reconnect the sensor cable to the control board and reinsert it into its retaining clip. Reconnect the lead wires to the motor terminal; rotate the motor shaft to confirm that nothing catches on any of the wiring.

Step 5

Return the motor cover, retaining plate, fiberboard wedge and vent cover to their original locations, and use the previously removed screws to secure each component in place.
