Fentanyl is a narcotic pain medication which comes in a convenient patch to provide continuous pain relief. Patients with medical conditions which cause long-term pain that's not relieved by using other pain medications may benefit from the Fentanyl patch. According to MayoClinic.com, Fentanyl patches may cause dependency, though if the patch is used as directed for the treatment of severe pain, it is unlikely that an addiction will occur. The patch is simple to apply, and can be left on while bathing and even swimming.
Step 1
Locate an area of skin to apply the patch. Ideally, choose a flat area that doesn't bend and has as little hair as possible. Good locations include the back, chest, upper arm or the waist. The skin should be healthy with no cuts or abrasions. Do not place the patch over any area that has previously been exposed to radiation treatment.
Step 2
Clean the skin where the patch will be applied with clean water only. Do not use soaps or other types of cleansers, and avoid using lotion which will prevent the patch from adhering to the skin. Make sure the skin is thoroughly dried to prevent the patch from peeling off prematurely.
Step 3
Remove the patch from its protective pouch by tearing the pouch open. Carefully peel the backing off of the patch while touching the back as little as possible.
Step 4
Place the patch on cleansed skin and press the patch into place firmly using the palm of your hand. Hold the palm of your hand over the patch for at least 30 seconds to ensure that the patch completely adheres to the skin. Press the edges down to make sure they are secure and that every area of the patch sticks.
Step 5
Wear the patch as directed by your doctor and remove after 72 hours. To remove the patch, simply peel it off the skin. Fold the patch so that it sticks together, and discard in a trash receptacle that is out of reach of children and pets. Apply a new patch if directed by your physician, alternating application sites each time.
