Medline Plus reports that aspart is a form of insulin used to treat both Type I and Type II diabetes. Aspart is a fast-acting, man-made version of human insulin that works by helping move sugar from the blood into other body tissues where it can be used for energy. Aspart comes in a vial and must be drawn up through a needle into a syringe and injected into the body. Because aspart is a fast-acting insulin, it should only be taken shortly before or after meals to avoid causing too much of a drop in blood sugar levels. Check the blood sugar level just prior to taking aspart to obtain the most accurate number for determining how much aspart to take.

Hypoglycemia

Medline Plus reports that hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is the most common side effect associated with the use of aspart. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include shakiness, dizziness, headache, nervousness, irritability, numbness or tingling around the mouth, weakness, pale skin and hunger. If left untreated, confusion, seizures or loss of consciousness may occur. Anyone taking aspart should ask her physician what to do if she experiences hypoglycemia. Physicians may recommend eating or drinking a food or beverage that contains sugar and rechecking the blood sugar. Anyone who experiences symptoms of hypoglycemia should seek followup medical care as the amount of aspart prescribed may need to be adjusted.

Hypokalemia

According to Drugs.com, aspart may cause hypokalemia, or low levels of potassium in the blood. Symptoms of low potassium include dry mouth, increased thirst, increased urination, irregular heartbeats, muscle pain or weakness, leg pain or confusion. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should notify his physician immediately for additional medical advise.

Allergic Reaction

Drugs.com reports that some people may experience an insulin allergy when taking aspart. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include itching, generalized skin rash, difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate and wheezing. Anyone experiencing these side effects should seek medical attention immediately.

Injection Site Effects

Medline Plus reports that some people may experience side effects at the site of the aspart injection. These side effects may include redness, swelling or itching at the injection site. RxList adds that long-term use of aspart may lead to lipodystrophy. Lipodystrophy includes varying degrees of thickening and thinning of fat tissue at the site of injection. Varying the location of the aspart injection will reduce the risk of this side effect.
