Hemorrhoids develop in the lower tissues of the rectum and anus when the veins become swollen. The tissues are often inflamed, painful, itchy, swollen and can form into a grape-sized mass, sometimes larger. Common causes include pregnancy, constipation and frequent diarrhea. Treatment of hemorrhoids usually focuses on pain and swelling relief. When necessary, medical treatment may be needed to remove the inflamed vein to diminish pain. Consult a health care provider before attempting to treat hemorrhoids at home.
Step 1
Reduce irritation by softening the stools to make them easier to pass. This can be done by eating prunes, drinking prune juice and drinking plenty of water. High fiber intake can improve bowel regularity, but without proper fluid intake, the result can actually be constipation.
Step 2
Add lubrication to the anus prior to a bowel movement. MotherNature.com suggests putting a generous amount of petroleum jelly onto the finger and inserting it about ½ inch into the rectum. This should make passing hard stools easier.
Step 3
Wash the bottom gently after every bowel movement. This can be done with wet toilet paper or a warm wash cloth.
Step 4
Dry the anal area with a clean towel or a blow dryer. Moisture can exacerbate irritation.
Step 5
Soak one or two times per day in a shallow tub of warm water and 1 cup of baking soda, Epsom salts or colloidal oatmeal. Soaking for 20 to 30 minutes can help fight pain and increase blood flow to the area to shrink the swollen veins, explains MotherNature.com. Be sure to dry the area thoroughly after the bath.
Step 6
Apply a generous amount of witch hazel to a cotton ball or soft cloth. Press it to the hemorrhoid gently or wipe the area to fight itching and discomfort.
