How to Replace the Grip of a Tennis Racket

Tennis racket grips become worn after use. It is time to put new grip material on a racket when the old grip material has flattened or become damaged. The new grip can be customized to the size the player desires. It takes about 20 minutes to regrip a tennis racket at home.

Step 1

Purchase a new grip for your tennis racket from a sporting goods store. Choose the grip based on how big you want your new grip to be. If you were satisfied with the size of your old grip, purchase a similar new grip. Choose a thicker grip material if you want a larger grip, or a thinner grip material if you want a smaller grip.

Step 2

Remove the old grip tape. Find the edge of the tape at the top of the grip, nearest to the strings of the racket. Pull the edge of the grip tape and unwrap it from the entire handle. Discard the old grip tape.

Step 3

Use a pair of pliers to pull out the staple holding the grip material in place. The staple is located at the bottom of the grip, furthest away from the strings. Save the staple.

Step 4

Pull off the old grip material and discard.

Step 5

Wipe off the old glue from the tennis racket handle using a cloth and isopropyl alcohol.

Step 6

Put on the new grip material. Start with the tapered side of the grip material. Remove 12 inches of the grip backing. Attach the tapered side of the grip to the butt cap at the bottom of the racket handle using a staple gun. Hold the racket upside down with the racket handle sticking up. Slowly turn the handle, while holding the grip material taut, and wrap the material around the entire handle.

Step 7

Cut the grip material to fit with a pair of scissors when you reach the top of the grip area.

Step 8

Attach a piece of electrical tape onto the top edge of the grip material to keep it from unraveling.
