Epstein-Barr virus is a common human herpes virus that occurs naturally in the environment. Many people are exposed to the virus and build antibodies to it without even realizing they have come in contact with it. In some cases, the Epstein-Barr virus may lead to infectious mononucleosis in individuals who have weak or compromised immune systems. There is no cure for Epstein-Barr or mononucleosis. Treating the symptoms and keeping the patient comfortable are the main goals.
Treating the Symptoms
The Epstein-Barr virus can cause a variety of symptoms that are similar to ones that occur during a cold or the flu. Over-the-counter medications can be used to treat common symptoms such as fever, cough, sneezing and sore throat. Acetaminophen and decongestants may be used to make the person more comfortable and help with breathing and inflammation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, physicians may prescribe steroids over a five-day period to control swelling in the throat.
Plenty of Rest
The body's immune system functions more efficiently while the body is at rest. Getting as much sleep as possible will allow more time for healing and a quicker recovery. The patient should avoid overexerting herself if at all possible. Becoming fatigued will use energy that should be saved for the healing process. The more tired a person is, the longer it will take for the body to recover from a systemic infection such as mononucleosis or Epstein-Barr.
Altering the Diet
Adding immune boosters to the diet is a must. Foods high in vitamin C and zinc will help to fight off infection and strengthen tissues in the throat and respiratory tract. Drinking more water will help to flush toxins and wastes from the body. It is important to eliminate foods with additives and preservatives; the body expends energy trying to eliminate them from the body, instead of healing and restoring its own immune system.
Eating whole foods is beneficial as well; foods with little processing have more nutrients and will strengthen the immune system and allow more efficient defense mechanisms to fight the infection.
Exercise
Exercise is beneficial during the recovery period, but it should be kept to a minimum and not overdone. Walking and stretching may be increased as time goes on. Exercising improves circulation and increases the amount of oxygen that is sent throughout the body. It helps to nourish the cells in the body and carry away waste.
