An ingrown hair occurs when shaving or plucking the hair causes the remaining hair to pull back into the skin. The tip of the hair can begin to grow into the skin itself instead of growing outside the body. The skin treats the hair the same as a foreign object in the skin and will form a reddened bump or a pus-filled lesion around the hair. This painful condition occurs most often for individuals who have course, curly hair, according to MayoClinic.com. Men experience ingrown hairs in their beard, but the condition can occur all over the body, including in the pubic region.

Step 1

Stop shaving or tweezing all pubic hairs for at least 30 days. This will allow all the previous hair to grow out and any ingrown hairs to have time to resolve, according to Skinsight.com.

Step 2

Wash the face with a mild soap. Cleanse in a circular manner to free up the free end of the hair before shaving.

Step 3

Wet the pubic hairs with warm water and use a shaving gel to condition the skin and hair. Using warm water will help soften the hair before shaving.

Step 4

Use a single blade razor. A double blade can allow the hair to retract back into the skin and cause an ingrown hair because it is too short.

Step 5

Shave with the direction of the hair growth, not against it. Rinse the razor blade between strokes.

Step 6

Avoid pulling the skin tight when shaving the pubic hairs. This method may help avoid small nicks, but pulling on the area may also cause the hair to pull back into the body, causing an ingrown hair.

Step 7

Shave with an electric razor with a longer setting on the blades. Keeping a bit of stubble will help decrease the possibility of having the hair retract into the skin.

Step 8

Skip every other day when shaving to allow the hair to grow a bit between episodes.

Step 9

Try a chemical lotion for dissolving the pubic hair instead of shaving and tweezing the area. Test the product on the inside of the arm to determine if skin irritation will occur before putting it on the delicate skin surrounding the pubic hair.

Step 10

Get electrolysis or laser hair removal to permanently remove pubic hair so as to prevent ingrown hairs from forming.
