New Age/alternative health advocates believe a buildup of residue in the intestinal tract keeps important nutrients from being absorbed into your body. The toxic buildup of mucoid glop can be removed with a "colon cleanse," but some preparatory work should make the process go a bit better. If constipation or a buildup of toxins in your system is a concern (the whole theory of toxic buildup is still somewhat controversial), then a colon cleanse may help if properly prepared for. Because the average diet tends to be low in hydration, fiber and unprocessed foods, a reversal of this diet trend is one way to make the colon cleanse easier. It can also be a good process before getting a colonoscopy so that process is less traumatic.
Plan the process when you can stay near home and a restroom. This is not a vacation or work-related activity.
Getting Ready
Step 1
Begin preparing for the colon cleanse about a week prior with the addition of roughage in the way of raw vegetables and fruits. Eating green, leafy vegetables and cooking with fish oil or sunflower oil will help the process along.
Step 2
Cut back or eliminate dairy, meat and other high-protein foods from your diet. Avoid highly processed foods.
Step 3
Start a regimen of drinking six to eight glasses of water per day. One alternative health practitioner advocates wearing a beeper that goes off every 20 minutes as a reminder to take in some water, in his case about 4 ounces at a time.
Step 4
During the actual colon cleanse, take in electrolyte fluids like Gatorade or other sports drinks to help ease the process and replace needed nutrients.
Step 5
To help with the process of passing toxins and residual excrement from your system be sure to exercise regularly with adequate cardio activity like rapid walks.
