Entocort EC is a brand name for the drug budesonide and is a registered trademark of the AstraZeneca group of companies. Entocort EC is a drug that is used in the treatment of mild to moderate cases of Crohn's disease, which is an inflammatory disease of the intestines. Although Crohn's disease can affect the entire digestive track, it is primarily an inflammation of the large and small intestines. There are side effects that are associated with taking Entocort EC as well as allergic reactions that require a physician to be contacted.

Common Side Effects

The most common side effects of taking Entocort EC include infections in the air passages. These infections are also called respiratory infections. Headaches and nausea are also side effects that are most common by Entocort EC patients. Also included as a side effect that is most common are symptoms of hypercorticism, which is a condition of having too much steroids in the body.

Hypercorticism

The side effects of taking Entocort EC that relates to symptoms of hypercorticism include an increase in the size of the face and of the neck, as well as acne. Bruising is another symptom of taking Entocort EC.

Immune System

Taking Entocort EC suppresses the immune system. If you take Entocort EC you should avoid other people who have infections, including those who have measles and chicken pox. People with suppressed immune systems are more susceptible to infections.

Grapefruit Juice

If you take Entocort EC you should avoid drinking grapefruit juice regularly because grapefruit juice increases the amount of Entocort EC in your bloodstream. Other juices, such as apple juice and orange juice, do not have this effect. If you take Entocort EC you can regularly drink other juices such as apple juice and orange juice.

Allergic Reactions

If you take Entocort EC you can experience an allergic reaction to the drug. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include the development of a skin rash, itching, fever, swelling of the face and neck and breathing difficulty. If any of these symptoms of an allergic reaction occur, contact a physician immediately as emergency medical care might be needed.
