If you have large brown spots on your skin, you may be wondering how best to get rid of them. Hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in the substance your body naturally uses to produce color, or pigment. This substance, called melanin, can overproduce as a result of medication, pregnancy or sun exposure.
Step 1
Wear sunscreen. Sunlight is one of the major causes of hyperpigmentation. Protecting your skin from overexposure to the sun will prevent many cases of hyperpigmentation. If you are already noticing brown spots, sunscreen will prevent the spots from getting any darker.
Step 2
Check your medications. Some hyperpigmentation can be caused by antimalarial drugs, antibiotics or heart medication (antiarrhythmics). Switching your medication may resolve these side effects.
Step 3
Try a home remedy. Use aloe vera gel, the juice squeezed from onions mixed with vinegar or straight lemon juice to get rid of light spots. Simply rub your choice on the developing spots to minimize their appearance.
Step 4
Try a lightening cream (see Resources). Products that contain hydroquinone often provide very good results. These products are not to be used, however, if you have a liver or kidney condition.
Step 5
Talk to your dermatologist. Very bad hyperpigmentation (called melasma or chloasma) can be treated with lasers or other topical prescription treatments. Some treatments can be expensive, however, and may require several visits if the hyperpigmentation is severe.
