Is the South Beach Diet Safe?

Phase 1 Cautions

When starting the South Beach Diet, you cut all starches and sugars. The goal is to jump-start your diet and curve carb cravings. You will lose a lot of water weight in the first 14 days. Fatigue and sluggishness are common in the first phase as you lose water, so keep up your fluids. You may want to consult a dietitian during this phase to make sure you are getting enough nutrients and vitamins. Losing large amounts of water weight could mean a loss in lean tissue, not fat. Doctors do not recommend a diet that limits fruits and whole grains in the long-term. Add in a multivitamin during all phases of the diet, plus an omega-3 supplement.

Blood Pressure & Cholesterol

Since the South Beach Diet encourages healthy fats, you could likely see a drop in your cholesterol levels. But a variety of other factors also affect your cholesterol, such as physical activity, medications, age, portion size and weight. If you tend to have high cholesterol, don't just assume that your numbers will drop to a safe level while you're on the South Beach Diet.
Since the South Beach Diet means a drastic change in your diet, your blood pressure could be affected. Monitor your blood pressure levels during the time.

Insulin Levels

If you are diabetic or have problems with blood sugar levels, consult with a doctor before beginning this diet. You will learn to eat low-glycemic foods, which do not spike your insulin levels as quickly as other foods. As you progress in the diet, monitor closely how the diet changes affect your insulin levels.

Food Safety Rules

While on the South Beach diet, you will be consuming more fresh foods. Know food safety tips for cooking eggs, meats and fish. Clean your hands and any utensils that come in contact with raw chicken or meats. Use one cutting board for raw meats and a separate one for cutting fruits and vegetables. Avoid eating raw eggs or foods with raw eggs. After cracking eggs, cook or refrigerate quickly. Clean fruits and vegetables to avoid pesticides or bacteria. Keep the fresh produce away from raw meats. When you buy fresh fish, cook it soon.
