Erectile dysfunction classifies as an abnormal condition in which a man cannot achieve an erection prior to intercourse, defines the Cleveland Clinic. Medical causes for this male dysfunction include illnesses that decrease sensation to the penis, such as with nerve damage; diseases that impede circulatory flow to the penis including diabetes and heart disease; and psychological problems that interfere with a full erection. Numerous medications can also impede a man’s ability to achieve an erection.

Hydrochlorothiazide

This prescribed medication works by inhibiting salt intake by the body, Drugs.com reports. By inhibiting salt intake, your body has less potential to retain fluids in its tissues. This medication treats conditions that cause edema, which include congestive heart failure, kidney disease, high blood pressure and cirrhosis of the liver.

Hydrochlorothiazide also can cause erectile dysfunction, the Cleveland Clinic states.

Fluoxetine

This prescribed medication for depression works by altering chemicals in the brain that influence panic disorder, eating disorders and major depression. Fluoxetine, one of the more popular selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, can produce erectile dysfunction as a side effect, notes Drugs.com.

Fluvoxamine

This medication belongs to a group of medications known as SSRIs. It changes the chemical makeup in the brain that affects obsessive-compulsive disorder and helps decrease its symptoms, according to Drugs.com. A common side effect of this medication, erectile dysfunction, remains a problem for men. Another common side effect is nausea.

Naproxen

Drugs.com notes that Naproxen belongs to a group of medications called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These medications relieve pain in the body associated with arthritis by decreasing the amount of hormones produced that influence inflammation. Side effects include erectile dysfunction, nausea, vomiting and headache.

Indomethacin

Indomethacin, another NSAID, therapeutically treats arthritic conditions such as gout that cause extreme pain. Gout and other arthritis sufferers must get a prescription for this medicine that may, as a side effect, cause erectile dysfunction, abdominal discomfort and nausea, reports Drugs.com.
