How to Make Body Oils at Home
Overview
Dry skin and sore muscles both benefit from the use of body oils. By making body oils at home, you can create your own custom scented oil blend to suit your particular skin type. An almond oil, jojoba oil and rose oil blend calms sensitive skin. Soothe your nerves while moisturizing your dry skin with an olive oil and lavender oil blend. Loosen sore muscles using an almond oil and peppermint oil blend for an invigorating massage.
Step 1
Choose a carrier oil as the base ingredient for the body oil. The carrier oil serves two purposes. One, it moisturizes the skin. Two, it dilutes essential oils so that they do not irritate the skin. You can use one carrier oil or a combination of different carrier oils. Popular carrier oils are almond oil, jojoba oil, olive oil and peanut oil.
Step 2
Place a funnel into the opening of a dark glass bottle. Pour the carrier oil into the glass bottle through the funnel. Fill the glass bottle three-fourths full. Remove the funnel from the bottle.
Step 3
Choose essential oils to use in the body oil. You can use one essential oil or you can use more than one. A good rule of thumb is to use no more than five different essential oils in a body oil. Essential oils serve two purposes. One, they are therapeutic. Two, they add a nice scent to the body oil. For example, lavender oil promotes relaxation and peppermint oil soothes sore muscles. Essential oils can be purchased at most health food stores. Make sure to buy pure essential oils that are marketed for skin care instead of the ones marketed as incense.
Step 4
Add the essential oils to the carrier oil. Add one drop of each essential oil per one ounce of carrier oil.
Step 5
Put the lid onto the glass bottle. Shake the glass bottle up and down for five minutes to blend the carrier and essential oils together.
Step 6
Store the body oil away from direct sunlight. Gently shake the bottle before use.
