Impotency, otherwise known as erectile dysfunction, is a common problem among men that affects the ability to achieve and maintain an erection. Factors that may influence impotency can be physical, psychological or age- or illness-related. The Minnesota Men’s Health Center states that in the U.S., an estimated 30 million men have experienced this problem. While impotency is problematic for those who experience it, treatments are available that work.
Sex Therapy
Impotence is a common problem for individuals experiencing stress and emotional problems. Factors such as low self-esteem, depression, guilt and psychological disorders can result in impotency. Better Health Channel reports that one in 10 cases of erectile dysfunction are caused by psychological factors—therapy is an important treatment in these cases. Sex therapy will assist individuals in dealing with emotional problems and understanding sexual responses. Typically a sex therapist will work with individuals or couples on factors of intimacy and communication. A sex therapist will focus on treating any underlying psychological issues causing impotency and address concerns about sexual function, behavior and interests.
Medication
Doctors and other health professionals commonly provide medication as a treatment for impotency. Medications will assist in treating any physical problems a male may be experiencing. These medications help stimulate erections and increase blood flow to the penis to maintain an erection. Erectile dysfunction drugs are available by prescription only and typically work by blocking chemicals that cause blood to flow out the penis, according to Drugs.com. An erection requires interaction between nerves, hormones, blood vessels and the brain. Medication can assist in treating any interferences.
Vacuum Constriction Device
A vacuum constriction device provides treatment for men who experience impotency. The device is an external pump used to create a vacuum and draw blood into the penis.
Cornell University Urology states that some vacuum constriction devices are U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved for management of erectile dysfunction. They work by creating negative pressure for inflow of blood to corporal bodies and erectile chambers. A vacuum construction device consists of a cylinder that is placed over the penis and a pump to suction out the air.
