The date rape drug, also known as Rohypnol, is a medication in a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. According to Drugs.com, Rohypnol's effects include sedation, muscle relaxation, reduction in anxiety and prevention of convulsions. This medication is not currently available by prescription in the United States, however it may be attainable by some through illegal channels. This drug is known as the date rape drug due to the partial amnesia that it may cause. It may be easily slipped into a soda or alcoholic beverage, leaving the victim unaware of what is happening. There are some side effects associated with Rohypnol that people should be aware of.

Amnesia

Amnesia may occur following Rohypnol use. An individual may have no memory or recollection of up to several hours of time. Some may experience a complete black out effect. If raped, a person may not be able to remember any of the details of their attack making it very difficult for officials to catch the rapist in question.

Dizziness and Drowsiness

Patients who have taken Rohypnol may experience dizziness and drowsiness lasting for up to 12 hours, says Drugs.com. Caution should be used while driving or completing tasks which may be dangerous until these side effects subside.

Lack of Coordination and Muscle Control

Lack of coordination and muscle control are common side effects of the date rape drug. People may experience an unsteady gait which puts them at a higher risk of sustaining an injury from falling.

Aphasia

After taking Rohypnol someone may experience aphasia, or difficulty with speech. Slurred words and an inability to express oneself may occur.

Nausea

The date rape drug may cause nausea, stomach pain, and other gastrointestinal disturbances. These side effects may last up to 12 hours. If nausea leads to vomiting it can be especially dangerous due to the lack of muscle control that Rohypnol causes. It may be easier for someone to aspirate, or choke, on their stomach contents and not be able to breathe.

High Doses

High doses of the date rape drug may cause respiratory depression, and possibly death. Those who suspect that they may have been given Rohypnol should seek emergency medical treatment. The use of Rohypnol in conjunction with alcohol is a particular concern as both substances potentiate each other's toxicity, putting a person at higher risk for experiencing respiratory depression.
