Hair is an interesting part of the human anatomy. It can be grown long. It can be shaved off. And it can be styled, spiked, colored, teased, crimped and dyed, all in the same year by the same person. With that being said, the key thing to do is keep it healthy. Just like the rest of the body, the hair will respond to outside stimuli that involve your lifestyle and your eating habits. The way to make it healthier is to make some adjustments in these two areas.
Step 1
Eat your protein. Hair is dead protein that is pushing up through the scalp. If your diet is low in protein, your hair can become brittle and weak. Some examples of proteins are chicken, turkey, eggs, lean beef and beans.
Step 2
Get Omegas in your diet. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are essential fats that your body cannot produce on its own. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, these healthy fats can help prevent hair loss and even encourage new growth. Some foods that contain Omega-3 are salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines, flax seeds and walnuts. Omega-6 fatty acids can be found in evening primrose oil and black currant oil.
Step 3
Avoid traction. If you constantly pull your hair back in braids, cornrows or dreads, you can develop a condition that is called "traction alopecia," which causes your hair to fall out. If it is caught early, it can be stopped. But if you ignore it for too long, the hair loss can be permanent.
Step 4
Go to the gym. Exercise comes with many benefits, including improving circulation. This improved circulation can be felt all over the body, even in the follicles of your scalp. Exercise at least 30 minutes on five or more days a week. You can use weight training or cardiovascular training, such as running, biking, swimming, stepping, rowing or even brisk walking.
Step 5
Get key nutrients in your diet. Various vitamins and minerals benefit the hair. Some of these include the B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin A. Foods that contain these nutrients include citrus fruits, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, whole grains, baby spinach and carrots.
Step 6
Give your scalp a massage. This can help stimulate circulation to the hair follicles, which in turn can promote growth. To make this experience even better, use a massage oil to help prevent dandruff and keep your hair and scalp more conditioned.
