Psoriasis is a condition in which the immune system attacks skin cells. This causes them to grow too fast, leading to the development of raised and red skin lesions which can be treated with light exposure.

Mechanism

Light therapy works by exposing the affected parts of the skin to a wavelength of light called UVB light. This light is able to slow the growth of the affected skin cells, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation.

Application

There are a number of different devices which can produce UVB light. This treatment may be given in a doctor's office or at home.

Features

Psoralen is a medication which can be given as part of a process known as photochemotherapy, explains PsoriasisNet. This treatment involves giving the patient psoralen and then exposing him to a form of light called UVA using an artificial light source.

Sunlight

Exposure to sunlight can also be used to treat psoriasis. Sunlight also contains UVB light, though it is more difficult to control the amount of light exposure received from the Sun.

Risks

One risk of using light therapy, according to PsoriasisNet, is that a sunburn can make psoriasis worse. As a result, patients should use care with light therapy and coordinate their treatment with a physician.
