How to Find a Sleep Expert

If you are one of the millions of American suffering from a sleep problem, finding a sleep expert may be the first step towards a resolution. Common symptoms of sleep problems includes difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, non-refreshing sleep and excessive daytime sleepiness. Sleep specialists treat sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, circadian rhythm disorders, and many other conditions.

How to find a sleep expert.

Step 1

Turn on your computer and make sure you have an internet connection. Open your favorite web browser to www.aasmnet.org. Locate the tab on the top right "Patients and Public," scroll down to "Find A Sleep Center" and click.

Step 2

You will be redirected to sleepcenters.org. Next, enter your zip code, then click search. This will generate a list of all of the sleep centers within a five mile radius. You can increase the search radius by scrolling through the distance tab and making another selection. Any of the sleep centers listed here will be accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Each of these centers has to meet high standards of quality control.

Step 3

Once you have a list of accredited centers close to where you live you might want to consider other factors to narrow your choice. This could include calling each of them to see which takes your insurance plan, searching for online reviews of the sleep center, or asking your primary care doctor which center they would recommend.

Tips and Warnings

  • Sleep doctors may be primary care physicians, otolaryngologists, pulmonologists, neurologists or psychiatrists. Board-certified sleep specialists have typically completed additional training in sleep medicine.
