Decongestants relieve nasal and sinus congestion caused by allergies or colds. While over-the-counter and prescription nasal decongestants are available, many would prefer to use gentler, alternative methods of lessening the pain and discomfort of a stuffy nose or nasal pressure. A variety of natural, effective decongestants can be utilized, including a Neti pot, certain foods, and steam and vapor.

Neti Pot

The Neti pot uses salt water to irrigate the sinuses. It is a practice that has been in use in India and other parts of the world for thousands of years, according to Healingdaily.com. Many practitioners of alternative medicine suggest it is the most effective method of clearing nasal congestion. To clear your sinus passages with a Neti Pot, prepare a salt solution. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt and a half-teaspoon of baking soda in a pint of lukewarm water, the Advanced Natural Medicine Health newsletter recommends. A drop or two of eucalyptus essential oil can be added if the congestion is severe. It is best to irrigate your sinuses with a Neti pot over a large bowl or sink to catch the water. Tilt your head down and slightly to the side, position the Neti pot spout at your nostril, making sure there is a seal between your nostril and the spout, and slowly pour the saline solution into your nose. Be sure to breathe through your mouth. If water drains out of your mouth, lower your forehead slightly. The water should flow out your opposite nostril, washing away anything blocking your nasal passages. When you're finished, exhale deeply a few times and repeat with the other nostril.

Food

Spicy food is a natural sinus decongestant. It will automatically trigger a response to your nose run, which assists with clearing up any congestion. Hot peppers, cayenne sauce, tabasco, curry, chili seasoning, wasabi and garlic will all help, says Qualityhealth.com. Do not try this method of alternative decongestant if you have a sensitive stomach or are prone to acid reflux or ulcers.

Steam or Vapor

Steam from a shower will loosen the mucus that may be clogging your nasal passages. Drink hot liquids for the same reason, Mothernature.com recommends. If you do not have access to a shower, you can create a steam bath that will work just as well. Pour boiling water into a large bowl, position your head over the water, and drape a towel over your head and the bowl.
