Vesicare, the brand name for the generic drug solifenacin, is an anticholinergic agent available as a prescription drug. It effectively treats overactive bladder by reducing urge incontinence, or the sudden and urgent need to urinate. It blocks certain receptors in the body, leading to a decrease in bladder contractions and a decrease in the pressure on the uterine muscles. Vesicare is available in 5 and 10 mg tablets, and is generally well-tolerated, though it may produce undesired side effects.

Dry Mouth

A common Vesicare side effect is dry mouth. Up to 28 percent of individuals may experience dry mouth, according to the “Drug Information Handbook.” Patients can chew gum or suck on hard candy to help with this side effect. Drinking plenty of water and practicing good oral hygiene may also provide relief. Patients should report the incidence of dry mouth to a physician if it does not decrease with continued use of the drug.

Contipation

Constipation may occur in about 13 percent of Vesicare users. Regular physical activity may help with constipation, and a diet rich in fiber, including fruits and vegetables, can help maintain normal bowel movements. If the constipation does not diminish, patients should speak with a physician who can recommend the appropriate treatment, such as a stool softener, or switch patients to another medication without this side effect. Drugs.com explains that if the constipation is severe or lasts for more than three days, patients should seek medical attention right away, and should also receive medical care if the constipation is accompanied by fever or severe abdominal pain.

Blurred Vision

The “Drug Information Handbook” reports that up to 5 percent of users may develop blurred vision. Vesicare may also cause dry eyes in up to 3 percent of patients. Patients should use caution when driving or operating heavy machinery until the effects on vision are known. Patients should inform a heath care provider if these side effects become bothersome.

Upset Stomach

About 4 percent of individuals may experience indigestion or upset stomach. Nausea may also occur in about 3 percent of individuals. Food does not interfere with the drug’s actions in the body; therefore, patients can take the medication with food to avoid these adverse effects. Patients should see an improvement in these side effects as the body adjusts to the medication.
