Bipolar I disorder is characterized by episodes of mania and major depression. The alternative treatments for bipolar I disorder may be no different than treatments used for other forms of bipolar disorder; it may be the specifics of each treatment are changed to match the individual’s experience of bipolar disorder. Alternative treatments cannot replace medication and therapy and should be used as a complement to those effective treatments.

Light and Dark Therapy

Light and dark therapy focuses on how sleep-wake cycles can trigger symptoms of mania and depression in people with bipolar disorder. With light and dark therapy the biological rhythms are regulated by managing the person’s exposure to light. The person has to have 10 hours of darkness per night, including exposure to artificial light.

Omega-3's

The intake of omega-3 fatty acids has shown some effect on improving the brain functions associated with bipolar disorder, notes the Mayo Clinic. While this treatment requires further research, people in parts of the world that regularly consume fish rich in omega-3’s have less instances of bipolar disorder.

Exercise

Getting regular exercise can be an effective way to regulate the mood swings associated with bipolar I disorder. Regular physical activity causes the brain to regularly release endorphins, which are chemicals that can improve a person's mood. Also, exercise can help maintain proper sleep patterns, which is important to ward off bouts of mania.

Acupuncture

The art of inserting tiny needles into the skin has been used to treat the depression symptoms associated with bipolar I disorder. Research on the benefits of acupuncture is limited, but studies have shown a reduction in both depression symptoms and mania, reports the Help Guide website. Acupuncture is a low risk alternative treatment.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy can help reduce tensions and anxieties that have been known to trigger and worsen the symptoms associated with bipolar I disorder. Massage therapy may be an alternative treatment to ward off bipolar symptoms.

Routine

According to the American Psychological Association, having balanced circadian rhythms that are maintained through regular sleep patterns and consistent daily routines may help relieve the symptoms associated with bipolar disorder. Therefore, a person with bipolar I disorder should benefit from the initiation of and maintenance of daily routines.

Meditation

Meditation has been shown to reduce and counter the symptoms of bipolar disorder. Engaging in mindfulness meditation can help reduce and prevent depression, anger, agitation and anxiety. Mindfulness meditation is accomplished through the use of meditation, yoga and breathing exercises.
