Will Fasting Cleanse a Colon?

The question of whether fasting alone will "cleanse" a colon assumes you believe in the alternative/holistic health outlook of toxic buildup in the intestinal walls. Colon flushes with a combination of electrolyte fluids, laxatives and clear fluid fasts are part of a routine preparation for a colonoscopy. Advocates of colon cleansing say that mucoid plaque buildup in the intestinal walls keeps nutritional substances from being properly absorbed into the body, slows down digestion and causes everything from constipation to cancer. If alternative theories are correct, those that practice colon cleansing have more energy, feel better and live longer. The question is whether fasting alone will accomplish that cleansing.

Types

Fasting to cleanse a colon can be assisted with herbs, juices, water, exercise and enemas. While "just fasting" may assume no chemical laxatives or processed liquid fluids are used, it doesn't mean the fast can't be gradual and include natural fruit juices (as in a "juice fast") and plenty of water. A fast without any of the above will simply put the digestive system into starvation mode, slowing down all processes as the body goes into semi-hibernation awaiting the introduction of the regular food intake it is used to.

Factors

Fasting is a process wherein it is important to prepare the organs for the fast, have the right elements for the fast and proceed so that the fasting process is gentle and healthy. Starting a fast having just completed a diet high in processed foods and low in fiber will create a shock to the digestive system and may result in the body trying to take in some of the toxins you are wanting to eliminate as if those toxins are nutrients. So the process should begin with a nutritional diet that is high in fiber and end with ingestion of good bacteria that aides in proper digestion.

Steps

To have a successful fast which will result in cleansing the colon, begin with proper exercise, intake of high fiber foods like leafy green vegetables and raw fruits. Gradually lessen your intake of meat, dairy and wheat flour items a week or two before the cleansing fast. Drink eight glasses of water daily and stay clear of nicotine, chemicals, prescription drugs or stressful situations. Switch to strained fruit juice, water and electrolyte-rich fluids like sports drinks for the fast itself. The length of the recommended fast varies according to different health proponents, with two to ten days being a conservative recommendation. At the end of the fast, introduction of acidophilus and other good bacteria for digestion with foods such as organic yogurt will help in restoring balance as you ramp up intake of solid foods. The reintroduction of high fiber fruits and vegetables will help push through any loosened mucous plaque and toxins at the end of the fast.
