Diovan HCT 160/80 is a combination drug that contains 160 mg of Diovan and 80 mg of hydrochlorothiazide. Diovan is a medication in a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists which are used for lowering blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic medication used to rid the body of excess fluid to help decrease blood pressure. This medication is available by prescription only. Some side effects are associated with Diovan HCT that patients should be aware of prior to initiating therapy.

Headache and Dizziness

Patients taking Diovan HCT may experience headache and dizziness, reports Drugs.com. These side effects may be temporary until the body adjusts to this medication. Those who experience dizziness from Diovan HCT should use caution while driving or completing tasks which may be dangerous. In some cases, headache and dizziness may be a symptom of low blood pressure. Patients should have their blood pressure monitored frequently be their physician in the first several months of treatment. They should be instructed on how to monitor their blood pressure at home, the symptoms of low blood pressure, and when to contact their physician.

Stomach Pain and Diarrhea

Stomach pain and diarrhea may occur in those taking Diovan HCT 160/80, says Drugs.com. These side effects may diminish as the body adjusts to Diovan HCT. Taking this medication with food or milk may help diminish these effects. Some may find it helpful to take this medication at night to avoid experiencing these effects. Severe diarrhea should be reported to a physician. It can lead to the development of dehydration, which can be especially dangerous.

Flu-Like Symptoms

Patients taking Diovan HCT 160/80 may experience flu-like symptoms. According to Drugs.com, Symptoms can include congestion, fatigue, sore throat, cough, and stuffy nose. The use of humidified air and throat lozenges may help relieve congestion and sore throat. If these symptoms occur in conjunction with fever, swollen lymph nodes, severe fatigue, difficulty breathing, wheezing, and a yellow-green tinged mucous it may be sign of an infection that may need to be treated with an antibiotic. Patients who experience these symptoms should seek medical attention.
