Whether you are putting on prescription contact lenses to improve vision or cosmetic lenses to change the color of your eyes, the insertion instructions are the same. It will probably feel strange the first time, however, after successfully putting the contact lenses in your eyes a few times, you should become accustomed to the process.
Step 1
Wash hands with soap and water. Dry hands with a clean towel.
Step 2
Open up one side of the contact lens case and pour the contents (lens and solution) into the palm of your non-prominent hand (your left hand if you are right-handed). Cup your hand to prevent the lens from falling, while allowing the lens solution to escape between your fingers.
Step 3
Use the index finger from your prominent hand to turn the contact lens over so that it is sitting in the palm like an upside-down bowl.
Step 4
Touch the index finger from your prominent hand to the contact lens to pick it up. When it is sitting on your finger, it should look like a bowl sitting right side up. The bottom of the bowl should be resting on your finger.
Step 5
Roll your eye up as if you are looking up and pull your bottom eyelid down using the hand that is not holding the contact lens. Touch the contact lens to your eyeball to transfer the lens from your finger to your eye. Look straight ahead and blink to center the lens on your eye.
Step 6
Repeat steps for the other eye.
Tips and Warnings
- If the contact lens does not transfer from your finger to your eye, your finger is probably too wet. Put the lens back in its case and repeat the steps to reinsert the lens. If a contact lens feels uncomfortable after insertion, it is probably inside out. Do not worry--besides discomfort, an inside out lens does not harm the eye. Take the lens out, turn it right side in and reinsert it.
- Always wash your hands before putting in contact lenses and always clean your lenses between uses to reduce the likelihood of developing fungal or bacterial infections in your eyes.
