The low-carb diet saw a surge in popularity in the early part of the 21st century. Many fast food restaurants offered low-carb fare to meet the demands of this popular trend. But the low-carb trend peaked in 2004, according to OpinionDynamics.com, and as people's food fads went in other directions, so did the low-carb fast food menu. Although it might not be as popular in 2010 as it once was, people can still find low-carb items on some fast food menus.
Hardee's
Hardee's prides itself on meeting the special dietary needs of customers by advertising on their website "Low Carb It. Trim It. Veg It." The 1/3 low-carb Thickburger is a 1/3-pound Angus beef patty with American cheese, tomato, onion, ketchup, mustard, mayo and dill pickles wrapped in an iceburg lettuce leaf. According to the Hardee's website, the 1/3 low-carb Thickburger has 420 calories and 5g of carbohydrates.
Burger King
Burger King does not have a specific low-carb menu. But their old marketing slogan "Have it your way" allows people to build their own burger. A low-carb BK Double Stacker consisting of two Whopper Jr. patties, bacon, BK Stacker sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion has 400 calories and 7g of carbohydrates, according to the Burger King website. A Whopper with the works and no bun has 430 calories and 7g of carbohydrates.
Donato's
Donatos, a pizza restaurant, has developed a No-Dough pizza. The website says the No-Dough pie is perfect for carb-counters. It is a 7-inch pizza built on protein crumbles. A No-Dough pepperoni has 494 calories and 17g of carbohydrates. A No-Dough Vegy has 413 calories and 22g of carbohydrates.
Chick fil-A
Chick fil-A tries to offer food items fit for a healthy lifestyle, according to the company website. It offers low-fat, low calorie and low-carb menu options. Low-carb options include the Chick fil-A Chargrilled Chicken Sandwich—protein style—with 7g of carbohydrates; a side salad with ranch dressing has 10g of carbohydrates; and the Chick fil-A Chargrilled Chicken Club Sandwich—protein style—with 7g of carbohydrates.
Subway
Most consumers trust Subway's nutritional claims, according to a survey conducted by Decision Analyst. In 2004, Subway featured low-carb Chicken Bacon Ranch and Turkey and Bacon Melt low-carb wraps. It seems as though Subway followed popular demand because the low-carb wraps are no longer on the menu, and today's menu highlights the fat content in the sandwiches. The only low-carb options at Subway are the oven-roasted chicken and roast beef sandwich with 10g of carbohydrates without dressing.
