What Supplements Boost Metabolism?

Thermogenic fat burners are specifically designed to stimulate the body's burning of calories by boosting metabolism. This increased metabolism tends to raise the body's core temperature, thus creating the thermogenic effect. Increased metabolism is generally needed to lose weight and increase energy levels. Any dietary supplement that contains the following major dietary ingredients will boost your metabolism.

Caffeine

Caffeine is a bitter tasting substance that is found in more than 60 plants and many food sources. It is used as a stimulant but is unregulated. There aren't any official recommendations for caffeine intake, but 300 milligrams is typically considered an acceptable level of caffeine. Excessive or chronic caffeine intake can lead to addictions, anxiety, restlessness, nausea, irritability, muscle tremors and sleeplessness.

Ephedrine

Ephedrine is an alkaloid from the Ephedra plant. It can strongly stimulate the body's central nervous system. In February 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the sale of all supplements containing Ephedrine due to the severe side effects of heart problems, strokes, kidney failure and death. Today, most companies sell a watered down version of Ephedrine that has no real merit for the supposed benefits. It has become more of a marketing ploy than an actual dietary aide or metabolism booster.

Synephrine

Synephrine is primarily derived from the fruit of the citrus aurantium. Like Ephedrine, Synephrine has a strong effect on the central nervous system. It is considered an alkaloid similar in structure to Ephedrine. In California, Synephrine is banned from being used by high school students due serious side effects, ranging from high blood pressure to arrhythmias.

Yohimbine

Yohimbine is a chemical found in the bark of the Pausinystalia Yohimbe tree that is native to Africa. There are no recommendations for intake levels and it has no real nutritional value. Yohimbine has been clinically proven to improve male erectile dysfunctions but has yet to be proven to lose weight despite its metabolism boosting effects. The side effects can range from nervousness to severe dizziness.

Warning

Any of these dietary ingredients can have a serious impact on the central nervous system. A physician should be consulted before taking any dietary supplement, especially one that alters the levels of one's metabolism. Also, dietary ingredients can also have an adverse reaction to prescription medications which can also cause serious medical conditions.
