Galena, Illinois, is known for its rolling hills, scenic backdrop and historic appeal. Located in the northwest corner of Illinois in Jo Davises County, Galena experiences the typical north Midwest winter including temperatures and guaranteed snowfall. This town's charm and winter weather make it a perfect place to enjoy a ski vacation.

Location

Galena is located in the far northwest corner of Illinois along one of the Mississippi River's many tributaries. This area, known as the Driftless Zone is a popular ski destination. The Driftless Zone got its name because during the Ice Age it was one area of Illinois that was not covered by glaciers. Because of this fact, it escaped glaciation and is now home to rolling hills, valleys, bluffs and large amounts of exposed rock.

Climate

During the winter months, December through March, Galena becomes a popular ski destination. January has the highest average snowfall recording 8.9 inches followed by December, February and March. Temperature averages during these four months stays slightly below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. This cold allows for the snow to stay in tact for a good portion of the winter season.
