Houston's temperate climate and rich cultural history entice millions of visitors to the region each year. The city is home to an impressive public parks system that provides plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities. In addition to great museums and libraries, there's plenty of things to do to keep children of all ages entertained during their stay.

Water Playgrounds

The city parks department operates six water playgrounds that are ideal for kids, particularly during the summer months. Parks include timed water spray elements, water cannons, sand beaches and several sprinklers. Though designed with safety in mind, parks are unguarded, so parents should accompany their children.

Canoeing

The Houston Canoe Club has offered beginner instruction to visitors and children since 1964. Pack a lunch and spend the day slowly cruising down one of several Houston-area rivers. Instructors are well versed in safety requirements, and life jackets are provided for children.

Zoos

The Houston Zoo is a fun and educational way to spend the day in the city with kids. Home to several hundred animal exhibits as well as the Kipp Aquarium, the Houston Zoo offers both public and private guided tours. A water park and kid-friendly restaurant are also located at the facility.

Children's Museum

One fun and educational way to beat the Houston heat is to spend the day at the Houston Children's Museum. The facility was the 2010 recipient of the Houston Chronicle's "#1 Kid Friendly Attraction" award. Interactive exhibits at the museum include "Floworks," "Kidtropolis, USA" and "Secrets of Circles."

Rollerskating

Rollerskating is a fun way to get exercise and ideal for rainy Houston afternoons. Houston's Dairy Ashford Roller Rink offers reasonable admission fees and skate rentals. The rink plays a variety of music, including contemporary hits, and a snack bar is located at the facility.
