Portland's rich history, bustling arts culture and spectacular outdoor activities make it one of New England's most visited locales. From sprawling nature trails in the wilderness west of the city to its miles of Atlantic coastline, Portland is home to a wide variety of low-cost and engaging activities for families.

Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse

The Spring Point lighthouse is situated at the end of a 900-foot breakwater wall on the city's Atlantic shore. Free self-guided tours of the facility provide insight into the light's pivotal history in Portland maritime culture. An ascent of the lighthouse, which still operates as a navigation aid, offers fantastic views of the surrounding coastline.

Eastern Promenade

Admission is free to the Eastern Promenade, Portland's recreational epicenter. Expansive green space is terrific for kite flying, soccer and Frisbee. The park is also home to tennis courts, baseball diamonds and walking paths. Bring a picnic and spend the day looking out onto the uninhibited views of the Atlantic coastline.

Hiking

Portland is surrounded by several great hiking trails that are terrific cost-free ways to spend the day with family. Check out the short Burnt Meadow Mountain Trail for cliff-top views of the shoreline, or the less strenuous, kid-friendly Gilsland Farm trail that abuts the Presumpscot River estuary.

Walking Tour

Free self-guided walking tour maps are available at the city's official website. Stroll through downtown's myriad of antique shops and catch a glimpse of artifacts and relics of old New England. Cheap eats and live music walking tours are also available. Free horse-drawn wagon tours are also offered to families during the winter months.

Beaches

Portland beaches can be accessed at no charge and are great for summer swimming, picnicking or just relaxing. East End Beach features picnic tables and unguarded swimming. Lifeguards do patrol Willard Beach, located on the city's south shore, which is visible by the Spring Point Lighthouse. Restrooms and parking are available.
