Home Remedies for Hair Loss in Women

Women lose hair for any number of reasons, including inheriting the condition to hormone imbalances during menopause, mental and physical stress and fad dieting that results in rapid, extreme weight loss. Alopecia, or hair loss, can be treated with home remedies that mainly include preventive techniques. However, doctors at the Mother Nature recommend a medical exam to make sure the cause is not an underlying health concern.

Daily Care

The best remedy for hair loss is prevention, which includes taking care of the hair as if it belonged to a baby. Mothers instinctively know that they must gently comb a baby's hair, which they also should do to their own locks. Hair should not be washed more than once a day and a de-tangler used before combing it out. Allowing hair to air dry can help to prevent split ends and stretching and breaking. An absorbent towel can be used to squeeze out excess water, but hair should never be rubbed vigorously when drying.

Styling

Hair should be styled when it is dry. Doctors at Mother Nature have found that switching shampoos at least four times a year helps to maintain the roots and prevent shedding. Teasing is another harmful technique that can pull hair out of the roots and cause unnecessary hair loss. While home permanent and coloring solutions are generally safe, when used improperly, they can break the hair and add to the appearance of hair loss. Hair that has been pulled back in a tight bun or cornrows will eventually cause bald patches.

Shampoo

Home remedies proposed by Ayurvedic practitioners to reverse hair loss include soaking hair in a raw egg mixed with six to eight drops of lemon juice prior to shampooing and massaging aroma oils into the scalp once a week. They suggest soaking a towel in hot water and squeezing out the excess before wrapping it around the head for 10 minutes every day for a week to encourage hair growth.

Herbs

Herbalists at Homemade Medicine offer a number of strategies to stimulate hair growth and prevent hair loss. They recommend emu oil and kalaya oil to stimulate hair roots and amica tincture to stimulate blood circulation on the scalp. For centuries herbalists have prescribed sage to stop hair loss. Many people add sage extract to their regular shampoo or rinse hair in a sage infused solution to promote hair growth.

Internal Care

Hair loss often can be remedied by changes in the diet. High protein diets are necessary to grow thick healthy hair. Hair that has been lost cannot be replaced without sufficient protein, which comes from at least three servings of lean protein every day, report doctors at Mother Nature. Iron deficiency also can cause alopecia. Iron rich foods, such as red meat, tofu, clams and broccoli, can help to stave off anemia and grow hair back.
