San Francisco is often at the forefront of positive change. This liberal, seaside city that is home to hybrid taxis, a 70-percent recycling rate and a convention center powered by solar energy, is filled with activities that could send you home feeling light and energized, and perhaps motivated to live a greener existence.

Culinary

San Francisco is a mecca of all things healthy, and this mindset is reflected in a variety of restaurants that focus on fresh, organic produce and meats. Places like Good Earth Cuisine, The Plant Cafe Organic and Golden Era Vegetarian Restaurant provide visitors and locals with health-conscious choices that, in addition to clean eating, also offer a little atmosphere and culture. If you prefer a slightly more hands-on culinary experience, take part in one of the cooking classes offered locally, or visit one of several farmer's markets and choose from a plethora of fresh produce, flowers and even artisan crafts.

Hiking

San Francisco has miles of trails within the city limits, including stretches in the Golden Gate Park and the Presidio. As an added bonus, many of these trail segments offer breathtaking views of the Pacific coastline and the San Francisco Bay shore. Just walking the hilly streets of the city will reward you with plenty of sightseeing opportunities, and give you a great workout in the process. Lombard Street, perhaps one of the most famous streets in the city, features a steep climb with a section of crooked, hairpin turns that are sure to work every muscle from the waist down.

Water Activities

Whether it's a thirst for knowledge or a taste for adventure and perhaps a little exercise, this coastal city has more ways to explore the water than you could possibly hope to squeeze into your itinerary in one visit. Learn about sailing by chartering a sailboat at Mission Creek Sail Tours, LLC at Embarcadero. Get up close and personal with one of San Francisco's most famous locations by boarding one of the 60-minute cruises with Alcatraz Excursions leaving from Alcatraz Landing at Fisherman's Wharf. For a more hands-on adventure, City Kayak at Yerba Buena has kayak rentals for those who would like to traverse San Francisco Bay by the power of their own muscles.

Rejuvenation

If rest, relaxation and rejuvenation are at the top of your agenda, then San Francisco is the place to be. Spas featuring organic materials and therapies, massages, fitness classes, meditation and yoga line the streets and fill the hotels. Visit one of these facilities such as SenSpa or Avra Organic Spa and experience a holistic wellness approach to relaxation, or perhaps a Thai or hot bamboo massage to sooth your mind, body and soul. After a trip to Suchada Thai Massage, you will leave the city feeling good as new.

Transportation

Finding your way around this exciting city can be part of your healthy experience. While the taxis may be hybrids, consider renting a set of wheels at Bay City Bike Rentals and Tours at Fisherman's Wharf. Or if you are in the North Beach area, stop in at Bike and Roll San Francisco to rent a bicycle and get a little exercise while exploring the sites. The iconic trolleys can get you from point A to point B in style, but good old-fashioned walking will allow you to put a few miles on your shoes and while you are at it, you will be able to take a little extra time to appreciate all that this city has to offer.
