Central Florida has long been a famous tourist destination for its many area theme parks, including Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Studios and Busch Gardens. These family-friendly theme parks are a great vacation destination, but are just a hint of the fun that Central Florida has to offer. Visitors can find pristine lakes and rivers, take a walk along tropical hiking trails, or spend a day cooling off in one of the area's water parks.
Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort And Campground
Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort is one of the original accommodations and provides the only camping available within Walt Disney World Resort. Each campsite can accommodate up to 10 guests, and pull-through check-in makes it easy to maneuver even the longest RV. Each site is landscaped to provide privacy to guests. Comfort stations are scattered throughout the resort and provide guests with toilets, showers, laundry facilities, telephones and ice machines. You'll never run short of things to do while staying at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort. A trip to Disney World alone will provide enough daily walking to satisfy the strictest cardio regimens. At the Wilderness Resort, guests can hike trails, rent bicycles or play ball games. The marina at Bay Lake rents pontoon boats and offers fishing expeditions. Campers can even dine with Disney characters at Mickey's Backyard BBQ, which is offered seasonally.
Florida Caverns State Park
Florida Caverns State Park is the only Florida state park that offers cave tours to the general public. A walk through the cavern will reveal majestic formations of stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, flow stones and draperies. The campground is available for RV and tent camping and can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet long. The 1,319-acre park has trails near the campground that offer six miles of outdoor exploration to hikers, bicyclists and horseback riders along the Chipola River. Canoes and kayaks can be rented from Thursday through Monday. A trip up Chipola River will reveal a variety of plants and animals, such as herons, egrets, alligators, beavers and snakes. Swimming is available in the Blue Hole swimming area. Fishing can be enjoyed from the boat ramp on Blue Hole Drive.
Salt Springs Recreation Area
Salt Springs Recreation Area is located in the Ocala National Forest, between the St. Johns and Ocklawaha Rivers. The campground is open to RVs as well as tent campers, and is a tranquil setting for a family vacation. A natural mineral spring, and namesake of the area, is great for swimming and soaking. Water activities are also available in Lake George and the surrounding rivers and streams. Hiking, fishing, boating and snorkeling are some other activities to keep the family active and having fun.
St. Lucie South Campground
The St. Lucie South Campground is located near Lake Okeechobee, the largest lake in the state of Florida. Campers will enjoy the tropical vegetation that is common in Florida. The campground has nine RV/tent sites and eight cruiser sites with electric and water hookups. Campers will never be bored at this amazing oasis. Swimming, fishing, boating and jet skiing are some popular lake activities that provide endless hours of fun. For campers who prefer not to get wet, there is a nature trail on the north side of the St. Lucie Lock and a playground at the campground to enjoy.
Orlando S.E. / Lake Whippoorwill KOA
The Orlando S.E. / Lake Whippoorwill KOA is affiliated with Kampgrounds of America. The campground is located 20 minutes from the theme parks of Central Florida, but is just far enough away to offer seclusion and tranquility. The campground is located along beautiful Lake Whippoorwill and has lake-view RV sites. Paddle boats and canoes can be rented from the campground and swimming is always a popular lake activity. In addition, the KOA has its own pool and hot tub. Golf courses are scattered throughout the area or you could take in an afternoon of watching Major League baseball training.
