Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, is an active destination for travelers. No matter your age or fitness level, there is something to do in this town, from kayaking to yoga. Wrightsville Beach has an organized parks and recreation department that provides classes, lessons and tours, allowing you to take in the sites and ocean breezes while remaining active.
Yoga
For a unique way to experience Wrightsville Beach, head out for one of the town's power yoga on the beach classes. You will participate in a vigorous form of yoga that focuses on strength and flexibility. The one-hour classes are on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 7, as of June 2010. Classes cost $8 for non-Wrightsville residents. If you are interested in a more gentle yoga class, head to Fran Russ Recreation Center on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30, as of June 2010.
Farmers' Market
When staying in Wrightsville, stock up on fresh produce from the local farmers' market. The Wrightsville Beach Farmers' Market is held on Mondays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., May through September, as of June 2010. You can find fresh locally grown fruits, vegetables, peanuts and herbs. The market is across from the post office on Old Causeway Drive.
Fitness
A fun and effective way to break a sweat, burn calories and get in a little social time is at the Wrightsville parks and recreation boot camp, led by a certified personal trainer. The instructor leads you through a variety of intense physical exercises while outside in the fresh beach air. Classes last for one hour. The year-round class is held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6 to 7, as of June 2010. During the summer, there is a Saturday class from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Classes are $8 for non-Wrightsville residents.
Tennis
Wrightsville has four public tennis courts. These are hard-surface courts. The parks and recreation department also provides public tennis lessons for adults and children.
Kayaking
You can rent single and double kayaks at Island Style Adventure Company. Rentals include a life vest, paddle, spray skirt and map. For a more adventurous experience, consider taking a guided tour. Kayaking experience usually is not necessary. Kayakers can expect to see osprey, herons, egrets and a variety of other wildlife.
