Seroquel (quetiapine) is classified as an atypical anti-psychotic medication, employed in the management of certain psychiatric disorders. It is a mood-stabilizing agent, commonly used to suppress the symptoms of manic depression (bipolar disorder) and schizophrenia. Some psychotic conditions are thought to be the result of an existing overabundance of neurotransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin. Seoquel opposes dopamine and serotonin receptors, bringing the flow of chemicals to functional levels. As with any medication, side effects are possible and should be considered carefully under the consultation of a licensed physician.
Hyperglycemia
Seroquel, and similar anti-psychotics, have been found to promote the occurrence of diabetes in high-risk patients. People with a family history of blood sugar irregularity, or risk factors, such as obesity, are recommended to have a physician monitor glucose levels before and during treatment with seroquel. Symptoms, such as increased urination or excessive thirst and hunger, may be cause for alarm, and should be communicated at once to a doctor.
Depression
While seroquel has been shown to effectively treat depressive episodes of bipolar patients, its use may actually bring about suicidal thoughts in persons under the age of 24. A recurring tendency to conceptualize death, homicide or suicide, should be immediately reported to a mental health professional.
Tardive Dyskinesia
Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a serious condition identified by uncontrollable facial, tongue and body movements. While some symptoms may become manageable, TD is generally an irreversible condition. It is believed to be caused by prolonged use to certain psychiatric medications.
Dementia
Use of seroquel has been shown to increase the likelihood of mortality in older persons suffering conditions associated with dementia. Stiff muscles, irregular heart rhythms, spontaneous muscle twitching, confusion or excessive perspiration are symptoms that may signify a dangerous reaction to the drug.
Miscellaneous Side Effects
Other side effects may include constipation, upset stomach, dry mouth, dizziness upon standing, elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels, abnormal renal function, sore throat and stuffy nose.
