State Park
Gulf Shores State Park has an artsy new pavilion that was built after Hurricane Ivan came through the area. The park covers more than 6,000 acres, with facilities for fishing and camping. The park offers cabins and cottages for rent. Cabins are somewhat smaller and a bit more rustic, while cottages are homes. Both supply full kitchens for preparing meals. Also within the park are tennis courts and a lake for water activities. Bikers and walkers enjoy the miles of trails that meander through the property. Golfers take advantage of the 18-hole course located within the park that is open every day. Dogs are permitted in certain areas of the park and in limited accommodations.
RV Camping
There are numerous hotels and condos in Gulf Shores but many visitors prefer to bring their accommodations with them. RVs are very popular, and Gulf Shores has a number of these facilities. Gulf Breeze RV Resort provides a long list of amenities in addition to RV parking. Electricity and water are supplied, as well as wireless Internet. Recreational facilities are available for basketball, swimming, miniature golf and tennis. Kids will appreciate the game room and playground, and additional activities are available, including trips to the casinos. Several golf courses are nearby.
Miniature Golf
Pirate's Island adventure golf in Gulf Shores offers miniature golf amid sunken pirate ships, refreshing waterfalls and watery graves. Pirate's Island offers two 18-hole courses and plenty of excitement. The Track Family Recreation Center includes a miniature golf course at its facility, called River Boat Adventure Golf. There's also a miniature golf course of 18 holes at Adventure Island, where you can play with a volcano erupting in the background.
Spas
Upscale hotels and condos sometimes have spas on site, making it convenient for visitors to indulge in head-to-toe body and mind pampering. Stand-alone spas offer the same services. Spas of Eden provides has two locations, one in a shopping strip mall and the other in Eden Condominiums. The spa offers hair services such as cutting, coloring and styling. Nails and pedicures come with full treatments, including paraffin wax therapy. Facials and body wraps give skin a soothing treat while massages relax every muscle in your body.
Dining
Keep your stomach on an even keel by choosing restaurants that offer healthy alternatives. You don't want to be sidelined by too many heavy foods that challenge your digestive system. Most restaurants include grilled vegetables, broiled fish and other healthy foods. Voyagers at Perdido Beach Resort offers an appetizer called heirloom tomato bruschetta. This is a light treat of mozzarella and diced tomatoes dressed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Entrees include baked, broiled or blackened fish. Add a salad of field greens or try the spinach salad, and you have a gourmet meal without the heavy cream and butter sauces.
