How to Relax Muscles Before Going to Bed

Your body encounters a lot during the day. Whether you've had a long day of being glued to your desk or you're just coming home from the gym, relaxing your muscles should become a part of your nightly ritual to help you relax before bed.

Step 1

Stretch. If you've been sitting at your computer all day, your movement has been restricted and to some degree your muscles are contracted. If you're coming from the gym, even if you stretched before coming home, you can probably achieve a deeper stretch since your muscles have relaxed a bit since ending your workout.

Step 2

Drink some water. Drinking water helps to flush out toxins in the body as well as avoid muscle cramps and feel more refreshed before going to bed.

Step 3

Cleanse your body in a shower or bath. Use sufficiently warm water (not piping hot) and a sponge. Apply a little pressure when washing to help loosen the muscles.

Step 4

Massage with a moisturizer. After your shower or bath, use ample moisturizer on your body and massage by applying some additional pressure as you rub it in.

Tips and Warnings

  • While you may not be partial to baths, taking one periodically is helpful to treating your muscles well. Adding in apple cider vinegar or epsom salts has been known to help remove toxins from the body as well as relieve any muscle soreness of tension. Consider treating yourself with a massage to get some additional muscle treatment.
  • Perform any stretching or massaging with caution. Be purposeful with your movements but you shouldn't feel any pain or discomfort.
